Ever wondered which country is the youngest in the world? That would be South Sudan!

On Saturday, 9th July 2011, South Sudan declared its independence from Sudan, becoming Africa's 54th nation and the world's newest state after decades of struggle between the North and South. South Sudan is home to about 11.7 million cattle, almost one for every person living there, and most people already know how much pride the nation takes in herding. Here, however, are a few more facts worth knowing.

South Sudan holds an estimated 3.5 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, among the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa. By some estimates, over 90 percent of it remains untapped.

The country is also known as the land of giants. The Dinka people are some of the tallest in the world, with men often standing well over six feet! The most well known name to carry that height onto the world stage is Manute Bol, who stood seven feet seven inches and became one of the tallest players in NBA history.

South Sudan is also home to some of the most strikingly dark-skinned people in the world. This distinction has made models of South Sudanese heritage, including Alek Wek, Adut Akech, and Anok Yai, some of the most sought-after faces in global fashion, walking runways for Chanel, Dior, and Prada.

Across South Sudan, meals are shared communally. Among the Dinka, this practice even has a name: 'Buro,' gatherings where everyone eats from the same dish while elders pass down stories and guidance to the next generation. It has never just been about the food. It is a way to keep their history alive, one meal at a time.

This Thursday, 9th July, bring that spirit home! Order a tray of your favorite meal from Dishout, gather everyone around, and eat the way South Sudan always has: together. Because as Africans, no matter the struggle, one thing remains, and that's family.
