Celebrating a Story of Growth

Today, July 1st, marks Rwanda’s Independence Day, and at African Dishout, we are taking a moment to celebrate the Land of a Thousand Hills and everyone who calls it home.

Rwanda’s story is one of resilience and remarkable transformation. Over the last decade, the country has averaged close to seven percent GDP growth annually, among the fastest growing economies on the continent. Coffee, tea, and tin remain central to its exports, alongside gold and other minerals. That kind of growth reflects deliberate planning. Technology tells the same story.

Rwanda’s information and communication sector is now its second-largest export earner. Kigali Innovation City, a fast-growing tech and innovation hub in the capital, has earned Rwanda a reputation in some circles as Africa’s answer to Silicon Valley.

It is Rwanda’s investment in its people and its image that tells the bigger story. The country holds the highest representation of women in parliament of any country in the world, at 63.8 percent. It has banned plastic bags since 2008, and every last Saturday of the month, Rwandans come together for Umuganda, a national day of community work that keeps the nation moving forward as one. The same spirit shows up on the road. Twice monthly, Kigali closes its streets to traffic for Car Free Day, where residents walk, run, and cycle together. The habit has measurably improved the city’s air quality. These efforts have helped make Kigali widely recognized as one of the cleanest cities in Africa.

This is the Rwanda we celebrate today. A nation that has rebuilt with purpose, and continues to rise with pride.

Happy Independence Day to every Rwandan in the diaspora and beyond.
